The first four examples are lines from an invented television bulletin; the last two are reactions from people watching it. All dialogue is original, with no connection to a series or broadcaster. No recording is attached: read the exchange, then retell what the characters have learned.

The idea

Track the event and its status separately. Tamamlandı presents the repairs as finished; açılması bekleniyor presents the opening as an expectation. In köprünün açılması, the opening belongs to the bridge: it means “the bridge’s opening”. Yapılan açıklamaya göre attributes the next claim to a statement; it does not independently verify it. Henüz açıklanmadı leaves a detail unknown so far.

Examples

  • Köprüdeki onarım çalışmaları bugün tamamlandı.The repair work on the bridge was completed today.
  • Köprünün yarın açılması bekleniyor. The bridge is expected to open tomorrow.
  • Açılış saati henüz açıklanmadı.The opening time has not yet been announced.
  • Yapılan açıklamaya göre köprü yarın açılacak.According to the statement, the bridge will open tomorrow.
  • Demek ki köprü henüz açılmamış.So the bridge has not opened yet, then.
  • O zaman sabahki haberleri de dinleyelim. Then let’s listen to the morning news as well.

Watch out

Finishing the repairs does not mean that traffic can already use the bridge. Do not retell açılması bekleniyor as açıldı. In the reaction Demek ki köprü henüz açılmamış, the viewer draws a conclusion from the bulletin; this is not a second report from the scene.

Try it yourself

  1. The repairs are finished. Choose “was completed”: tamamlandı / bekleniyor.

    Show answer or example answer

    tamamlandı

tamamlandı: the prompt says the repairs are finished, so the bulletin can report their completion today. Bekleniyor would leave that work only expected.

  2. Opening is expected, not completed. Choose: bekleniyor / tamamlandı.

    Show answer or example answer

    bekleniyor

bekleniyor: the expected event is the bridge’s opening tomorrow. The sentence gives a forecast, not evidence that the bridge has already opened.

  3. Attribute the information to the statement: “according to”. Choose: göre / rağmen.

    Show answer or example answer

    göre

göre: açıklamaya göre tells us where the information comes from. Rağmen would mean “despite” and introduce a contrast that the prompt does not give.

  4. The time has not been announced so far. Choose “yet”: henüz / artık.

    Show answer or example answer

    henüz

henüz: with açıklanmadı, this means no opening time has been announced up to now. It does not say that the opening itself has been cancelled.

Use it today

Label the first four lines as completed event, expectation, missing detail or attributed claim. Then write a two-sentence summary for a character who missed the bulletin, keeping tomorrow’s opening as an expectation.
