At a home visit, a warm welcome and a clear refusal can belong in the same conversation. Practise moving from the doorway to the table, offering an alternative and ending the visit with specific thanks. The dialogue uses polite forms without making every exchange formal.
The idea
Match the phrase to the speaker’s role and leave room for an answer. The host can guide guests with Buyurun, salona geçelim and offer a choice with İsterseniz çayı balkonda içebiliriz. Here isterseniz makes the proposal depend on the guests’ wishes. Biraz daha börek alır mısınız? offers food; it does not ask about a habit. The guest can thank the host, state that the amount is enough and close the offer with almayayım. Keep the polite siz forms consistent; familiar sen forms suit a different relationship.

Watch out
Do not swap the cook’s and diner’s roles: Elinize sağlık praises the person who prepared the food, while Afiyet olsun wishes the eater well and can answer that praise. To refuse a second helping, thanks alone may leave your choice unclear; add bu kadarı yeterli or daha fazla almayayım.
Try it yourself
Ev sahibi: ___, salona geçelim. The host invites the guests into the living room. Choose Buyurun or Hoş bulduk.
Show answer or example answer
Buyurun
Buyurun fits the host’s invitation to move into the living room. Hoş bulduk would be the arriving guest’s reply to a welcome, so it does not fit this speaker.
___ çayı balkonda içebiliriz. Leave the guests a choice. Choose İsterseniz or Mecburen.
Show answer or example answer
İsterseniz
İsterseniz means “if you wish”: the guests can choose the balcony. Mecburen means “out of necessity” and would present the location as imposed by circumstances.
Misafir: Teşekkür ederim, bu kadarı yeterli; daha fazla ___. Decline more food. Use almak, first-person singular negative optative (“I’ll pass”).
Show answer or example answer
almayayım
almayayım expresses the guest’s own decision to stop taking food. The negative optative suits “I’ll pass”; almayın would instead tell the other person not to take any.
Misafir: ___, çorbanın kıvamı tam istediğim gibi. Thank the person who cooked, using sağlık and the polite siz form.
Show answer or example answer
Elinize sağlık / Ellerinize sağlık
Elinize sağlık or Ellerinize sağlık acknowledges the cook’s work. The following comment about the soup makes the thanks specific; the polite possessive addresses the person who prepared it.

Act out the visit in pairs, then swap roles. Include an offer, a refusal with thanks, the host’s acceptance of that refusal and an alternative drink. Finish with praise for the cooking and thanks for the visit. Change two details without changing the polite form of address.
