A complaint needs both an observable problem and a clear request. In this fictional shop exchange, a customer returns with a bag whose zip sticks. Practise the conversation, then restate the request in writing; the exchange leaves the outcome open.

The idea

Give the purchase context and the fault before asking for a solution. Ürünü iade etmek means to return the product; para iadesi means a refund, while değişim means an exchange. Değişim yerine makes clear which option you do not want. For a formal written request, Ödediğim tutarın tarafıma iade edilmesini talep ediyorum names the requested action: the money is to be returned to the speaker. Tarafıma means ‘to me’ in formal language; rica ediyorum is a courteous way to make the spoken request.

Watch out

Talebinizi aldık confirms receipt, not approval. Do not read a future reply such as sonucu size bildireceğiz as a promise of a refund. Likewise, şikâyet etmek says you are complaining but does not itself specify the solution you want.

Try it yourself

  1. The customer wants to return the product. Complete: Ürünü ___ etmek istiyorum. Choose iade or şikâyet.

    Show answer or example answer

    iade

iade: the customer wants to hand the product back. Şikâyet would describe making a complaint without saying that the product is being returned.

  2. The customer wants their money back, not a new item of the same kind. Complete: ___ yerine para iadesi rica ediyorum. Choose Değişim or Onarım.

    Show answer or example answer

    Değişim

Değişim: a new item of the same kind would be an exchange. The words after yerine identify the preferred result, money back; onarım would mean repair.

  3. Complete the written request: Ödediğim tutarın tarafıma iade ___ talep ediyorum. Choose edilmek or edilmesini.

    Show answer or example answer

    edilmesini

edilmesini: the request concerns the money being returned, so the passive action is made into a noun clause and marked as the object of talep ediyorum. The bare infinitive edilmek does not fit this sentence.

  4. Talebinizi aldık; sonucu size bildireceğiz. Does this say the request was approved (onaylandığını) or received (alındığını)?

    Show answer or example answer

    alındığını

alındığını: aldık reports receipt. The future bildireceğiz postpones the result, so the sentence contains no approval of the requested refund.

Use it today

In pairs, act out a shop conversation about a faulty bag. The customer gives the purchase context and the fault, then requests money back instead of an exchange. The employee acknowledges the request. Finally, write two sentences: the fault and a formal refund request.
