This B1 lesson uses the official 2026 calendar to practise dates and durations. The table gives day and month, then the Turkish holiday name and its meaning. The planning sentences are invented situations, not announcements about a workplace.

The idea

Read the year, the date and the starting time separately. The half days before the two religious festivals and on 28 October start at 13:00. Including that half day, Ramazan Bayramı lasts 3½ days, Kurban Bayramı 4½ days and Cumhuriyet Bayramı 1½ days. Köprü literally means “bridge”; here it describes joining a holiday to a weekend. Tatili hafta sonuyla birleştirmek means “to join the holiday to the weekend”. The conditional izin alırsak means “if we take leave”: the plan is still conditional.

Watch out

A headline about a long break does not establish that everyone is off. In the ministry’s 2025 announcement, 2–4 April were idari izin for public employees. That specified extra leave, not a new annual holiday. Also, arife means the eve of a religious festival; its holiday portion is not a full day. The religious dates in this table belong to 2026.

Try it yourself

  1. According to the calendar, how much of 28 October is a holiday: a full day or a half day? Write the Turkish expression.

    Show answer or example answer

    yarım gün

yarım gün: on 28 October the holiday starts at 13:00, so the calendar does not mark the entire day as a holiday.

  2. On what date does the first day of Ramadan Feast fall in 2026? Write the day and the Turkish month name.

    Show answer or example answer

    20 Mart

20 Mart: the 2026 calendar puts the first festival day on 20 March; 19 March is the eve, not day one.

  3. What is the Turkish name of the additional leave announced for public employees for 2–4 April 2025?

    Show answer or example answer

    idari izin

idari izin: the announcement names additional leave for public employees on those dates; its stated group matters.

  4. Fictional plan: Thursday is a holiday, Friday leave is granted, and Saturday and Sunday are days off. How long is the uninterrupted break? Write the number in words and add “days” in Turkish.

    Show answer or example answer

    dört gün

dört gün: Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday make four consecutive days in this fictional plan. Friday is included only because leave is granted.

Use it today

In an invented timetable, Thursday is a public holiday and Saturday and Sunday are days off. Write two Turkish sentences: propose taking Friday off to bridge the gap, then ask whom a leave announcement covers.
