HGS stands for Hızlı Geçiş Sistemi, an electronic toll collection system. At B2, practise reading a toll message and a fine notice by separating the amount, the event and the payment status. All example situations and practice notices are fictional.

The idea

Read the noun first, then the status: geçiş ücreti names the toll, bakiye the account credit, and trafik cezası a traffic fine. Tahsil edilmiştir reports collection; tahsil edilmemiştir reports that collection has not happened. These passive forms foreground the transaction rather than who collected the money. In sign language, Sağa dönülmez expresses a prohibition, not a prediction about a driver.

Watch out

Do not read ücret as “fine” or a displayed amount as proof of payment. Likewise, ihlal tarihi dates the violation, while tebliğ tarihi dates its formal notification; the labels do not describe the same event. This lesson teaches how to read those distinctions, not how to calculate legal deadlines.

Try it yourself

  1. Fictional HGS message: “Geçiş ücreti tahsil edilmiştir.” Write the two words confirming that the money has been collected.

    Show answer or example answer

    tahsil edilmiştir

tahsil edilmiştir: these words confirm receipt of the money. Merely naming the toll would not tell us whether it had been collected.

  2. Which word names the available money in an account: ücret, bakiye or ceza?

    Show answer or example answer

    bakiye

bakiye: the question asks about money available in the account; ücret is a charge and ceza a penalty.

  3. Fictional report: “İhlal tarihi: 2 Kasım. Tebliğ tarihi: 5 Kasım.” Write the field name for the day of notification.

    Show answer or example answer

    tebliğ tarihi

tebliğ tarihi: the notification is dated 5 November in this fictional record. The 2 November entry concerns the violation itself.

  4. “Sağa dönülmez.” Does this express permission (izin) or prohibition (yasak)?

    Show answer or example answer

    yasak

yasak: dönülmez rules out the right turn here. It does not offer the driver a choice to turn.

Use it today

Invent two short notices: one stating that a toll has been collected, the other that it has not. Add separate fields for a violation date and a notification date. Explain the difference between Dur and Yol ver using the table.
