Belediye means municipality or municipal administration. In everyday sentences about going there or opening its door, it can refer to the municipal offices. Here you will use the word as a destination, a workplace and the source of a reply.

The idea

Keep the whole stem belediye: belediyeye names a destination, belediyeyi a specific direct object, and belediyenin means “of the municipality”. The final e gives front-vowel endings; no consonant softens. Compare belediyemiz (our municipality) with belediyemizin (of our municipality). “Our” expresses a connection to the community, not necessarily ownership.

Watch out

Do not mistake the final -ye of belediye for a dative suffix already attached. For a destination, add -ye to the complete word: belediyeye. The two letters y have an e between them. For “I will call the municipality”, use belediyeyi, not the possessive belediyesi.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete: I will go to the municipal offices in the afternoon.

    Show answer or example answer

    belediyeye

belediyeye: gideceğim describes going to a destination here. The final vowel stays, and a linking y comes before the dative e: belediye + ye.

  2. Complete: I will call the municipality to ask this question.

    Show answer or example answer

    belediyeyi

belediyeyi: the municipality is the specific institution you will call, so it is the direct object of arayacağım. The ending is -yi; belediyesi would instead mean his/her municipality.

  3. Use the plural: These municipalities work together.

    Show answer or example answer

    belediyeler

belediyeler: several municipalities are working together, and there is no number before the noun. Add -ler after the final e; bu remains unchanged before the plural noun.

  4. Complete: Our municipality’s garden is small.

    Show answer or example answer

    belediyemizin

belediyemizin: bizim identifies the municipality as ours, while bahçesi names its garden. Build belediye + miz + in: first our municipality, then the relation to its garden.

Use it today

Imagine a municipality in a fictional town. Write when you will go there, who works there and what its building is like. In the last sentence, use belediyemizin and check what belongs to the municipality.
