An idea for a project and an opinion in a discussion can both be fikir. Learn to recognise the shorter stem in fikri, fikre and fikrim, while keeping the full stem in plural forms.

The idea

When a vowel-initial case or possessive ending attaches directly to fikir, the second i drops: fikri, fikre, fikrin, fikrim, fikrimiz. The consonants stay unchanged. Before consonant-initial endings, keep both vowels: fikirde, fikirden, fikirler. Context distinguishes bu fikri (this idea as an object) from onun fikri (his/her idea); fikrin can mean your idea or of the idea.

Watch out

Do not carry the shortened stem into the plural. For my idea, use fikrim; for my ideas, use fikirlerim: the plural attaches first and preserves the second vowel. The later possessive ending does not remove it.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete with “my idea”: I have another idea.

    fikrim

fikrim: benim identifies the speaker as the owner, so the noun needs first-person possession. With -im directly after the noun, the result has two vowels, not three.

  2. Complete with “my ideas”: All my ideas are in this notebook.

    Show answer or example answer

    fikirlerim

fikirlerim: bütün refers here to all of the speaker’s ideas. Build the plural first, then add the owner: fikir + ler + im. The full stem remains before -ler.

  3. Complete: I agree with his/her idea.

    Show answer or example answer

    fikrine

fikrine: onun makes this his/her idea, and agreeing with it requires the dative after katılmak. Start from fikri, then add the linking n and -e.

  4. Complete: We do not share the same opinion on this issue.

    Show answer or example answer

    fikirde

fikirde: the expression aynı fikirde olmak means to share an opinion. The negative sentence says that we do not agree on this issue; there is no movement towards an idea.

Use it today

Write three sentences: introduce your own idea, mention several of your ideas, then agree with another person’s idea. Circle the endings and explain why the stem keeps or loses its second vowel.
