A fırın can be the bakery where you buy bread or the oven where you bake it. Use the surrounding words to identify the meaning, then choose the form for the job the noun does in the sentence.

The idea

The stem fırın stays whole before suffixes: fırına, fırını, fırınım. Its final n does not soften; its last vowel ı gives forms such as fırınlar and fırından. Both meanings use the same forms. In fırının ekmeği, fırının means “of the bakery”; after senin, it means “your bakery”. Context also distinguishes the object fırını from the possessed noun in onun fırını.

Watch out

Do not drop the second vowel when adding a vowel-initial suffix: write fırını, not fırnı. Keep both original dotless ı letters and add a third one for this form. In onun fırınında, the extra n after fırını links possession to the location ending; it does not replace a vowel.

Try it yourself

  1. Use the ablative form of fırın: We buy bread from the bakery every morning.

    Show answer or example answer

    fırından

fırından: the bakery is the source of the bread, so the requested ablative uses -dan. Fırında would instead locate the buying at the bakery.

  2. Complete with a form of fırın: We clean the oven after the meal.

    Show answer or example answer

    fırını

fırını: the oven is the specific thing we clean, so it takes the accusative. The stem keeps its two vowels; adding -ı makes three syllables.

  3. Use the plural of fırın: The bakeries on this street open early.

    Show answer or example answer

    fırınlar

fırınlar: the prompt asks for several businesses, so add -lar. The verb açılıyor can remain singular with this nonhuman plural subject.

  4. Complete with a form of fırın: Three people work at his or her bakery.

    Show answer or example answer

    fırınında

fırınında: onun identifies an owner, and the workers are at that bakery. Combine fırın + -ı + linking n + -da to express both possession and location.

Use it today

Write four sentences: buy bread from a bakery, describe several bakeries, name the owner of one bakery and clean an oven. Use fırın in both senses and check every dotless vowel.
