Explain why something happens by putting a whole situation before için. The word chains isolate the verb form; only adding için makes these forms express a reason.

The idea

Build the reason with a verb stem + -dık + a possessive ending, then write için separately. The table covers all eight base shapes and their combinations. After ç f h k p s ş t, the suffix starts with t; its vowel follows four-way harmony. Its final k becomes ğ before a vowel, but remains before -ları/-leri. The possessive ending identifies the subject of the reason: geldiğim, geldiğin, geldiği, geldiğimiz, geldiğiniz, geldikleri için. These refer to I, you, he/she/it, we, you (plural or polite), and they. Negation precedes this structure: bil-me-diğ-imiz için. With an adjective, use ol-: sıcak olduğu için. Context determines a present or past reading; -dık here is not a finite past tense.

Watch out

Do not select the possessive ending from the main-clause subject: in Sen güldüğün için ben de güldüm, you cause my laughter. Also, dinlenmek için means “in order to rest”, whereas dinlendiğim için means “because I rested”. Keep için outside the joined word.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete the reason: because I got up early. Write only the missing word.

    Show answer or example answer

    kalktığım

kalktığım: the person getting up is I, so the ending is -ım. The final k of kalk- triggers t; only the suffix’s own k softens: kalk-tığ-ım.

  2. Complete: because you laughed, I laughed too. The reason has the subject you, singular.

    Show answer or example answer

    güldüğün

güldüğün: the laugh causing the result belongs to you, so use -ün, even though I am the main-clause subject. The vowel ü gives gül-düğ-ün.

  3. Give a negative reason: because we do not know the way. Write only the missing word.

    Show answer or example answer

    bilmediğimiz

bilmediğimiz: we lack the knowledge. Put the negative -me after bil- and add -diğ-imiz; the negative vowel explains why this form uses i.

  4. Complete: they answered immediately because they understood the question. Both agreement forms are accepted with onlar.

    Show answer or example answer

    anladıkları / anladığı

anladıkları: the ending -ları identifies the people who understood, and its consonant keeps the preceding k hard. With explicit onlar, anladığı is also possible; the main verb does not force a plural suffix here.

Use it today

Write three reasons for changes to a plan: one with different subjects, one negative, and one with an adjective plus olduğu için. Mark the subject of each reason.
