A future action can identify a person, an object or a time: çalışacak ekip is the team that will work, and gelecek hafta is next week. Here you practise the suffix shapes before a noun.

The idea

Use -ecek after e i ö ü and -acak after a ı o u. After a vowel add linking y: söyleyecek, arayacak. Before a vowel-initial possessive ending, final k becomes ğ: göreceğimiz ev, the house we will see. These endings identify the subject of the relative clause. Keep k before a consonant: okuyacakları metin, the text they will read. The chains below show forms used before nouns, not complete sentences.

Watch out

Do not confuse the person acting with the person described. Gelecek misafir is the guest who will come; çağıracağım misafir is the guest I will invite. In the second phrase, -ım identifies me as the person inviting; it does not mean that the guest belongs to me.

Try it yourself

  1. Use gelmek: There is tea for the guest who will come tomorrow. Write the missing word.

    Show answer or example answer

    gelecek

gelecek: the guest will do the coming, so no possessive ending is needed here. The front vowel in gel- selects -ecek.

  2. Use aramak: You are the person I will call. Write only the missing participle.

    Show answer or example answer

    arayacağım

arayacağım: benim makes me the caller. The vowel at the end of ara- requires y, and -ım changes the preceding k to ğ.

  3. Use görmek: The house we will see tomorrow is empty. Write only the missing participle.

    Show answer or example answer

    göreceğimiz

göreceğimiz: bizim requires the plural subject ending -imiz. Its first vowel softens k; gör- selects -ecek, despite the rounded ö.

  4. Use söylemek: What you will say matters. Address one person and write only the missing participle.

    Show answer or example answer

    söyleyeceğin

söyleyeceğin: senin identifies one listener as the future speaker. Keep the final e of söyle-, insert y, and use -in after softened ğ.

Use it today

Describe a person who will come and something you will prepare. Circle the noun each participle describes, then mark who performs each future action.
