Use değişmek to describe a difference between before and now, a gradual change or a future one. The subject is the person or thing that becomes different; the sentence need not say what caused the change.
The idea
Değişmek is intransitive in this use: Toplantının saati değişti says that the meeting time changed. Its stem is değiş-; common forms are değişiyor, değişti, değişecek and the aorist değişir. Keep ş in all of them. In the first-person future, the suffix changes: değişeceğim, değişeceğiz. Negatives include değişmiyor, değişmedi and değişmez. Pronouns can be omitted when the ending or context identifies the subject.
| Subject | Present continuous | Past | Future | Aorist | Negative present |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ben | değişiyorum | değiştim | değişeceğim | değişirim | değişmiyorum |
| sen | değişiyorsun | değiştin | değişeceksin | değişirsin | değişmiyorsun |
| o | değişiyor | değişti | değişecek | değişir | değişmiyor |
| biz | değişiyoruz | değiştik | değişeceğiz | değişiriz | değişmiyoruz |
| siz | değişiyorsunuz | değiştiniz | değişeceksiniz | değişirsiniz | değişmiyorsunuz |
| onlar | değişiyorlar | değiştiler | değişecekler | değişirler | değişmiyorlar |

Watch out
Do not use değişmek with a direct object to mean “alter something”: Saati değiştim does not express “I changed the time”. Say Saati değiştirdim. In Saat değişti, the time is the subject. This does not mean that the change had no outside cause; it simply leaves the cause unstated.
Try it yourself
Complete with the past of değişmek: the meeting time changed yesterday.

değişti
değişti: dün places the event in the past, and the meeting time is a third-person subject. The past ending begins with t after the voiceless ş; no personal ending is added here.
Complete with the future of değişmek: I too will change over time.
Show answer or example answer
değişeceğim
değişeceğim: ben requires the first person. The future base değişecek takes -im, and its final k softens to ğ before that vowel.
The address is the same. Complete with the negative past of değişmek.

değişmedi
değişmedi: the address is still the same, so the sentence denies a past change. The negative -me comes before the past ending; after its vowel, that ending begins with d.
We changed the meeting time. Choose değişmek or değiştirmek and use the past, first person plural.

değiştirdik
değiştirdik: biz performed the action on toplantının saatini, a definite direct object. The transitive verb is needed, and the past ending -k identifies “we”.

Write three sentences: something that has changed in your neighbourhood, something that has stayed the same, and something you deliberately changed. Check whether the changing thing is the subject or the object.
