Use gerçekleştirmek to say who carries out a project, conducts an experiment or makes a dream come true. You will distinguish the action from the event that takes place.

The idea

Gerçekleştirmek is transitive: the subject brings something about, and a definite object takes the accusative, as in projeyi gerçekleştirmek. It often occurs with plans, projects and organised events; hayalini gerçekleştirmek means to make your dream come true. Keep the stem gerçekleştir- in gerçekleştiriyorum and gerçekleştirdim. In gerçekleştireceğim, the future ending’s k becomes ğ before the first-person ending; the stem itself does not change.

Watch out

In Deney gerçekleşti, the experiment is what took place. In Gönüllüler deneyi gerçekleştirdi, the volunteers carried it out: the subject changes and deney becomes deneyi. Do not use gerçekleştirmek for suddenly understanding something; that sense of English “realise” usually needs fark etmek or anlamak.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete with the affirmative past of gerçekleştirmek: Biz dün planı ___.

    Show answer or example answer

    gerçekleştirdik

gerçekleştirdik: dün places the action in the past, and biz requires the plural ending -k. The team carried out the plan, so the longer transitive stem is needed.

  2. Use the affirmative future of gerçekleştirmek: Ben yarın bu hayali ___.

    Show answer or example answer

    gerçekleştireceğim

gerçekleştireceğim: ben calls for the first-person singular. The future -ecek meets -im, so its final consonant softens to ğ; gerçekleştirecekim is not the form.

  3. Choose gerçekleşti or gerçekleştirdi: Toplantı dün ___.

    Show answer or example answer

    gerçekleşti

gerçekleşti: the meeting is the event that took place. No organiser is the subject here, so the form meaning “carried something out” does not fit.

  4. Put bu proje in the accusative: Ekip ___ gerçekleştirdi.

    Show answer or example answer

    bu projeyi

bu projeyi: the demonstrative identifies a specific project. The accusative therefore belongs on proje, and y separates its final vowel from -i; bu stays unchanged.

Use it today

Describe a small project in three sentences: what your group carried out, what it could not carry out, and what you will carry out next. Then describe one event with gerçekleşmek, making the event the subject.
