Comparing means examining similarities and differences. Use karşılaştırmak to discuss alternatives, explain how you assess them, or describe a comparison in a report.

The idea

Use bir şeyi bir şeyle karşılaştırmak: the specific object takes the accusative, while the comparison partner takes ile or its attached form, as in yeni yöntemi eski yöntemle karşılaştırmak. You can also group both items as one object: iki taslağı karşılaştırmak. Add a criterion with açısından: maliyet açısından means “in terms of cost”. The stem karşılaştır- stays intact in karşılaştırıyorum and karşılaştırdık; the table also shows the passive karşılaştırılıyor.

Watch out

Do not shorten this verb to karşılaşmak: that means to encounter or run into something or someone. A comparison does not itself say that two things are alike. For resemblance, use benzemek; its partner takes the dative, unlike the ile phrase here.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete “Compare this fabric with the other one”, using diğeri.

    Show answer or example answer

    diğeriyle / diğeri ile

diğeriyle / diğeri ile: this is the other fabric, the comparison partner. When ile attaches to the vowel-final diğeri, the linking y gives diğeriyle; the separate form is equally correct.

  2. Use karşılaştırmak in the past for “we”: Yesterday we compared these two phones in terms of battery life.

    Show answer or example answer

    karşılaştırdık

karşılaştırdık: the comparison happened yesterday and the subject is “we”. After the stem-final r, the past ending begins with d; the final k marks the first-person plural.

  3. Use karşılaştırmak in the future for “I”: I will compare the new method with the old one.

    Show answer or example answer

    karşılaştıracağım

karşılaştıracağım: the speaker announces a future comparison. The future ending takes back vowels, and its k softens to ğ before the vowel of the first-person ending.

  4. Use the passive present continuous of karşılaştırmak: In the report, two proposals are being compared in terms of cost.

    Show answer or example answer

    karşılaştırılıyor

karşılaştırılıyor: the proposals are being compared; they are not doing the comparing. The passive -ıl follows the stem, then the present continuous -ıyor. The sentence leaves the person making the comparison unnamed.

Use it today

Choose two bags or two study methods. Write what you are comparing and name two criteria. Then describe the same comparison in one passive sentence. Continue with the lesson on benzemek.
