You will conjugate uçmak in the present, past and future and say where something or someone flies.

The idea

The stem uç- ends in a consonant and its last vowel is the back rounded u, so -iyor becomes -uyor: uçuyorum. The final ç is voiceless, so the past suffix begins with t: uçtum. The future -acak loses its k to ğ before a vowel (uçacağım), but the ç of the stem stays. Where something flies from takes -den (pencereden) and where it flies to takes -e (İzmir'e).

Examples

  • Kartal dağın üstünde uçuyor. The eagle is flying above the mountain.Dağın üstünde means 'above the mountain': the mountain takes the genitive -ın, and üstünde carries the locative. The verb stays last.
  • Serçe pencereden uçtu.The sparrow flew out of the window.Pencereden uses the ablative -den for the place it leaves. The past is uçtu: after the voiceless ç the suffix begins with t, not d.
  • İzmir'e yarın sabah uçacağım.I will fly to Izmir tomorrow morning. The place you fly to takes the dative: İzmir'e, with an apostrophe after the name. The pronoun is dropped because -ım already says 'I'. In -acak the k softens to ğ before the vowel.
  • uçuyorumI am flyinguçuyor-iyor / -ıyor / -uyor / -üyor: happening nowum-im / -sin / -iz / -siniz: I am, you are, we areAfter the back rounded vowel u, the present suffix -iyor turns into -uyor: uç-uyor-um.
  • uçtumI flewuçtu-di, -dı, -du, -dü, -ti: the past (geldi, yaptı)mPast person endings: -m, -n, -k, -niz, -lerThe stem ends in the voiceless ç, so the past suffix starts with t and is rounded after u: uç-tu-m.
  • uçacağımI will flyuçacağ-ecek / -acak: will, going toım-im / -sin / -iz / -siniz: I am, you are, we areThe back vowel u gives -acak, and its k softens to ğ before the vowel ı. The stem's ç does not change.
  • Uçmaktan korkuyorum.I am afraid of flying. The basic form uçmak can take a case like a noun. Korkmak asks for the ablative, and after k the suffix is -tan: uçmaktan. This is a short preview of a later topic.
  • Tatil çok çabuk uçtu.The holiday flew by very quickly.Uçmak is also used for time passing quickly, as English says 'flew by'. Tatil is the subject and needs no ending.

Watch out

Do not use the voiced past of other verbs: uçdum is wrong, the form is uçtum. Only the k of the future suffix softens; ucacağım is wrong, the stem keeps its ç in uçacağım.

Try it yourself

  1. Give the present-tense form for ben (I): am flying.

    Show answer or example answer

    uçuyorum

uçuyorum: the last vowel of uç- is the back rounded u, so -iyor becomes -uyor; -um marks ben.

  2. Give the past form for ben (I): flew.

    Show answer or example answer

    uçtum

uçtum: ç is voiceless, so the past suffix starts with t and is rounded after u; -m marks ben.

  3. Give the future form for biz (we): we will fly.

    Show answer or example answer

    uçacağız

uçacağız: the back vowel u gives -acak, and its k softens to ğ before the vowel of -ız; the stem's ç does not soften.

Use it today

Write three sentences about a bird, a plane or your own trip: one in the present, one in the past and one in the future. Say why each suffix has the shape it has.
