You will conjugate ödemek in the present, past and future and say what you are paying for.

The idea

The stem öde- ends in a vowel. Before -iyor that final e drops and the new vowel rounds after ö: ödüyorum. Before -di the stem stays: ödedim; in the future a buffer y is inserted (ödeyeceğim) and k softens to ğ before a vowel. What you pay is the object: a particular thing takes the accusative (faturayı), an amount stays bare (yüz lira), and what the money is for goes before için.

Watch out

Do not write the present with the stem vowel: ödeyorum and ödiyorum are wrong, the form is ödüyorum. The e comes back in the past (ödedim) and in the future (ödeyeceğim).

Try it yourself

  1. Give the present-tense form for ben (I): am paying.

    Show answer or example answer

    ödüyorum

ödüyorum: the final e of öde- drops before -iyor and ü appears after ö; -um marks ben.

  2. Give the past form for ben (I): paid.

    Show answer or example answer

    ödedim

ödedim: the stem does not change, -di starts with d after a vowel, and -m marks ben.

  3. Give the future form for biz (we): we will pay.

    Show answer or example answer

    ödeyeceğiz

ödeyeceğiz: a buffer y follows the vowel e; the front vowel gives -ecek, and k softens to ğ before -iz.

  4. Add the accusative to fatura (bill): I paid the bill.

    Show answer or example answer

    faturayı

faturayı: a particular bill takes the accusative; the buffer y follows the vowel a, and the back vowel a gives -ı.

Use it today

Write three sentences about something you pay for: one in the present, one in the past and one in the future. Underline the stem of each form and check what happened to its last vowel.
