Sağlamak can mean providing something useful or making an outcome possible. You will describe resources, benefits and arrangements that ensure something happens, rather than translate every use as “give”.

The idea

With a resource, use a noun: gençlere çalışma alanı sağlamak means to provide young people with workspace. The recipient takes the dative. With an outcome, use a nominalised clause as the object: herkesin konuşmasını sağlamak means to ensure everyone speaks. Here herkesin identifies who speaks; konuşmasını combines a verbal noun, third-person possessive ending and accusative. The stem sağla- becomes sağlı- in sağlıyorum, but stays in sağladım and sağlarım. The future is sağlayacağım: a linking y precedes the future ending, whose k softens before the personal ending.

Watch out

Do not transfer the dative of the recipient to an outcome: use konuşmasını sağlamak, not konuşmasına sağlamak. To ensure that something does not happen, negate the embedded action: dökülmemesini sağlamak. Negating sağlamak instead says that the outcome is not ensured.

Try it yourself

  1. Write only the third-person singular present continuous of sağlamak: this workshop is providing young people with workspace now.

    Show answer or example answer

    sağlıyor

sağlıyor: the workshop is providing space now, so the third-person present continuous fits. The final a of sağla- narrows to dotless ı before -yor.

  2. Complete with the nominalised object form of konuşmak: this schedule ensures that everyone speaks in turn. Write one word.

    Show answer or example answer

    konuşmasını

konuşmasını: it is everyone’s speaking that the schedule ensures. The -sı links the action to herkesin, and the final -nı marks that whole action as the object.

  3. Write only the first-person singular future of sağlamak: I will provide the necessary materials tomorrow.

    Show answer or example answer

    sağlayacağım

sağlayacağım: yarın and the requested future form place the supply tomorrow; ben requires first-person singular. The future k becomes ğ before -ım.

  4. Use a negative nominalised object form of dökülmek: this lid ensures that the water does not spill. Write one word.

    Show answer or example answer

    dökülmemesini

dökülmemesini: the desired result is that the water does not spill. The negative -me comes before the verbal-noun -me; possessive -si and accusative -ni complete the object.

Use it today

Describe a shared workspace in three sentences: what it provides, what it enables people to do, and what it prevents from happening. Use one future form and underline each object of sağlamak.
