Use şaşırmak for your reaction to something unexpected. Work through the forms table, then say what caused the reaction. Surprise can be pleasant or unpleasant; this verb alone does not tell us which.

The idea

In the sense “be surprised”, the person reacting is the subject. A noun naming what surprises them takes the dative: fiyata şaşırmak, sonuca şaşırmak. The stem stays şaşır- in şaşırıyorum and şaşırdım. The aorist is şaşırırım, with two occurrences of ır. The future has şaşıracağım and şaşıracaksın. The plural forms in the table are valid; with çocuklar, şaşırdı is also natural.

Watch out

Do not swap feeling surprise with causing it. Bu habere şaşırdım means the news surprised me; Bu haber beni şaşırttı puts the news in the subject position and uses şaşırtmak. The person affected is beni, not bana. In a question, keep mı separate: şaşırttı mı?

Try it yourself

  1. Add the case ending to the price that surprised my father. Write the complete word.

    Show answer or example answer

    fiyata

fiyata: the price is what provoked the reaction, so it takes -a. The final t of fiyat stays unchanged before this vowel; write fiyata, not fiyada.

  2. Complete in the past: we were very surprised at the result.

    Show answer or example answer

    şaşırdık

şaşırdık: biz refers to the speakers together, so the past form ends in -dık. The stem ends in voiced r, which keeps the past suffix’s d.

  3. Complete in the future: I too will be surprised.

    Show answer or example answer

    şaşıracağım

şaşıracağım: the speaker predicts their own reaction. Before the first-person ending, the future suffix’s k softens to ğ. The separate de in the prompt means “too”.

  4. Choose the verb and use the past: this news surprised me.

    Show answer or example answer

    şaşırttı

şaşırttı: the news caused the reaction in me, which calls for şaşırtmak. Its stem ends in t, so the past adds -tı, giving two consecutive t letters.
