Use üzülmek to describe sadness at news, a mistake or a decision. You will identify who feels the emotion and what causes it, then practise the verb in four common tenses.
The idea
With üzülmek, the person who feels sad is the subject. A noun naming the cause can take the dative: habere üzülmek, to be upset about the news. Senin için üzülüyorum expresses sadness for you. Keep the stem üzül- in üzülüyorum, üzüldüm and üzülürüm. The future forms üzüleceğim and üzüleceğiz have ğ. The negatives include üzülmüyorum and üzülmedim. In Sen de üzüldün mü?, both de (too) and the question particle mü are separate words.

Watch out
Üzüldüm means I felt upset; üzdüm means I upset someone. Compare Bu habere üzüldüm with Bu haber beni üzdü: the news is the cause in both, but only the second sentence makes it the subject. Keeping or dropping -ül- changes who does what.
Try it yourself
Put the noun in the dative: I was very upset about this news.

habere
habere: the blank names the cause of sadness. The noun haber ends in a consonant and its last vowel is e, so add -e directly; haberi would mark an object instead.
Use the past: I was upset about this mistake yesterday.

üzüldüm
üzüldüm: dün puts the feeling in the past, and ben requires first person singular. After voiced l, the past suffix begins with d; the preceding ü gives -dü, followed by -m.

üzüleceğiz
üzüleceğiz: the prompt asks for a future feeling shared by biz. The future base üzülecek takes the first-person plural ending, and its final k softens to ğ before the vowel.

üzdü
üzdü: bu haber is the subject causing sadness and beni is the person affected. Choose üzmek and its third-person past form; üzüldü would make the news itself feel sad.
