Tartışmak can describe a reasoned discussion or an argument. You will name the issue, say who is involved, and use context to make the intended meaning clear.

The idea

A specific topic is a direct object: bu öneriyi tartışmak means to discuss this proposal. The other participant takes ile: seninle tartışmak can mean to discuss or argue with you. Both can appear together: bu öneriyi seninle tartışmak. The stem tartış- stays intact in tartışıyoruz, tartıştık and tartışacağız. Subject pronouns can be omitted because the ending identifies the person.

Watch out

Do not use seni tartışmak for “argue with you”: it makes you the subject of the discussion. Use seninle tartışmak. Nor does ile automatically imply a quarrel; the situation and tone decide. Bağırmadan means without shouting and can make a calm discussion explicit.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete with öneri (proposal): we will discuss this proposal tomorrow.

    öneriyi

öneriyi: this particular proposal is the object. The vowel-final noun öneri needs the linking y before the accusative -i.

  2. Combine sen and ile: I do not want to argue with you.

    Show answer or example answer

    seninle / senin ile

seninle (also senin ile): the gap names the person addressed, not the topic. With sen, the form used before ile is senin.

  3. Use the past tense with “we”: we discussed the budget yesterday.

    Show answer or example answer

    tartıştık

tartıştık: dün places this completed discussion yesterday and the prompt asks for “we”. The past ending starts with t after voiceless ş, and final -k marks “we”.

  4. Use the future tense with “we”: we will discuss the options tomorrow.

    Show answer or example answer

    tartışacağız

tartışacağız: the prompt asks for a future action by “we”. The k of tartışacak becomes ğ before the vowel of -ız, giving tartışacağız.

Use it today

Write two sentences about discussing a proposal and one about avoiding an argument. Name a topic and a participant at least once, then move one event into the past.
