A short contribution starts before your actual point: you ask for the floor, listen to the reply and then speak. Practise that exchange while following a simple meeting agenda.

The idea

Use söz alabilir miyim? to ask for a turn to speak. The person leading the meeting can reply Buyurun, sizi dinliyoruz. An agenda is gündem, and an item is madde: gündemin ilk maddesi names the first item. Önce gündeme bakalım and Şimdi ikinci maddeye geçelim invite the group to act together; bakalım and geçelim mean “let’s”.

Ece: Buyurun, sizi dinliyoruz.

Deniz: Proje için iki haftamız var. İlk hafta hazırlık yapalım.

Watch out

Söz almak and söz vermek assign different roles. In a meeting, you take the floor with söz almak and give someone else the floor with söz vermek. On its own, Söz veriyorum usually means “I promise”; it does not announce that you want to speak.

Try it yourself

  1. Choose the form meaning “look at the agenda”. Önce ___ bakalım. (gündeme / gündemde)

    Show answer or example answer

    gündeme

gündeme: the agenda is what you look at. Bakmak takes the dative here; gündemde would mean “on the agenda” and would not supply that complement.

  2. Ask to speak yourself; do not offer someone else the floor. Bu konuda söz ___? (alabilir miyim / verebilir miyim)

    Show answer or example answer

    alabilir miyim

alabilir miyim: the speaker wants permission to take a turn. Verebilir miyim would ask whether the speaker may give something, so it reverses who receives the floor.

  3. Complete “the first item on the agenda”. Gündemin ilk ___ yeni proje. (madde / maddesi)

    Show answer or example answer

    maddesi

maddesi: the item belongs to the agenda. Gündemin marks the first part of this possessive construction; madde needs the matching ending, with s between the vowels.

  4. Suggest moving to the next item now; do not report a past action. Şimdi ikinci maddeye ___. (geçelim / geçtik)

    Show answer or example answer

    geçelim

geçelim: the group is invited to move on now. Geçtik reports that “we moved on” already, so it cannot express this proposal.

Use it today

In pairs, write a six-turn meeting with two agenda items. One person opens it; the other asks for the floor and requests clarification. End by moving to the second item. Then swap roles.
