Practise choosing the closest meaning, not merely a word on the same topic. These original B2 exercises use synonyms, idioms and fixed phrases; they are not official exam questions.

The idea

Read the whole sentence, then replace the marked word or phrase mentally. Keep who does what, the positive or negative meaning, and the degree of the action. Treat an idiom as a unit: a replacement must preserve the message of the whole expression, not just one familiar word. Finally, check that the replacement fits the sentence grammatically.

Examples

  • Bu açıklama bana pek açık gelmedi. This explanation did not seem very clear to me.
  • Ekip bu öneriyi hemen geri çevirdi. The team immediately rejected this suggestion.
  • Dün rapora kısaca göz attık.We took a quick look at the report yesterday.
  • Yoğun yağmura rağmen ekip çalışmayı sürdürdü.Despite the heavy rain, the team continued working.
  • Sürekli sözümüzü kestiği için sonunda ona kulak asmadık.Because of the constant interruptions, we eventually stopped paying attention to that person.
  • Bu konuyu yarınki toplantıda ele alacağız.We will address this issue at tomorrow’s meeting.

Watch out

A dictionary equivalent need not fit every context: açık can describe a clear explanation, but dürüst describes honesty. Do not replace individual words inside a fixed expression with synonyms; compare a paraphrase of the whole expression instead.

Try it yourself

  1. Choose the option closest in meaning to the marked expression in this context. Write the option, not a letter. Metindeki açıklama oldukça açık; teknik bilgisi olmayan biri de anlayabilir. [açık] → anlaşılır / dürüst / aydınlık

    Show answer or example answer

    anlaşılır

anlaşılır: even someone without technical knowledge can understand the explanation. That supports clarity, not the honesty of a person (dürüst) or a well-lit space (aydınlık).

  2. Choose the option closest in meaning to the marked expression in this context. Write the option, not a letter. Ekip, bütçeyi aştığı için teklifi geri çevirdi. [geri çevirdi] → inceledi / reddetti / erteledi

    Show answer or example answer

    reddetti

reddetti: exceeding the budget gives a reason for rejecting the offer. erteledi would mean postponing it, leaving the decision or action for later; inceledi would only mean examining it.

  3. Choose the option closest in meaning to the marked expression in this context. Write the option, not a letter. Dosyayı ayrıntılı incelemedik; toplantıdan önce yalnızca göz attık. [göz attık] → kısaca baktık / dikkatle inceledik / tamamen unuttuk

    Show answer or example answer

    kısaca baktık

kısaca baktık: the sentence explicitly says we did not examine the file in detail. dikkatle inceledik conflicts with that contrast, while tamamen unuttuk denies the brief look that did occur.

  4. Choose the option closest in meaning to the marked expression in this context. Write the option, not a letter. Yeni planı hazırlarken ulaşım masraflarını da göz önünde bulundurduk. [göz önünde bulundurduk] → hesaba kattık / gözden kaçırdık / ortadan kaldırdık

    Show answer or example answer

    hesaba kattık

hesaba kattık: transport costs were included in the planning considerations. gözden kaçırdık would mean overlooking them; ortadan kaldırdık would claim that the costs were eliminated.

Use it today

For each choice, underline the clue in the sentence and explain why one rejected option changes the meaning. Then write a new context in which that rejected option would fit.
