You will say what you like and dislike, and pick the right case for each of the two verbs.

The idea

Sevmek takes the accusative: kahveyi seviyorum, balığı sevmiyorum. Hoşlanmak takes the ablative: kediden hoşlanıyorum, yağmurdan hoşlanmıyoruz. In the negative, the negative marker goes inside the verb and the case stays: sevmiyorum, hoşlanmıyorum.

Examples

  • Ben kahveyi seviyorum.I like coffee.Sevmek puts its object in the accusative: kahve takes a buffer y after the vowel e, giving kahveyi. The pronoun ben may be dropped.
  • Annem balıktan hoşlanmıyor. My mother does not like fish.Hoşlanmak takes the ablative: balık ends in the voiceless k, so the ending starts with t. The negative marker sits inside the verb: hoşlanmıyor.
  • Biz yağmurdan hoşlanmıyoruz. We do not like the rain.
  • Oğlum müziği çok seviyor. My son likes music a lot. Before the vowel of the accusative, the final k of müzik softens to ğ: müziği. Çok (a lot) stands right before the verb.
  • Seni seviyorum.I love you.Seni is the accusative of sen. With a person, sevmek means love, which is stronger than English like. The pronoun ben is dropped, as usual.
  • Sen futboldan hoşlanıyor musun?Do you like football?
  • sevmiyorumI do not likesevmiyor-miyor / -mıyor / -muyor / -müyor: not doing nowum-im / -sin / -iz / -siniz: I am, you are, we are

Watch out

Do not turn English “like” into one pattern: Kediyi hoşlanıyorum and Kediden seviyorum are both wrong, because hoşlanmak wants -den/-dan and sevmek wants the accusative. Also, Seni seviyorum means “I love you”: with people, sevmek is stronger than “like”.

Try it yourself

  1. Add the right case ending to kedi (cat): I like cats.
