Use avukat for a lawyer, regardless of gender. You will identify a particular lawyer, say who receives a message and specify whose lawyer you mean.

The idea

The final t stays before vowel endings: avukatı, avukata, avukatım. The last vowel a gives back-vowel endings; the locative and ablative are avukatta and avukattan. Possession comes before case: avukatıma means “to my lawyer”. The table separates cases from possessives; avukatları can mean their lawyer or their lawyers, depending on context.

Watch out

Do not automatically read avukatım as “I am a lawyer”. In Avukatım şimdi toplantıda. it is the subject, “my lawyer”; in Ben de avukatım. it states the speaker’s profession. Nor does avukat change its final consonant like some other nouns: write avukatı, not avukadı.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete with “lawyer”: I called this lawyer yesterday.

    Show answer or example answer

    avukatı

avukatı: bu identifies a particular lawyer being called, so the direct object needs the accusative. Keep the final t and add dotless ı.

  2. Complete: My lawyer is off today.

    Show answer or example answer

    avukatım

avukatım: benim identifies the speaker as the possessor. The person on leave is the speaker’s lawyer, so this is possession, not “I am”.

  3. Complete: The documents stayed with the lawyer.

    Show answer or example answer

    avukatta

avukatta: the documents stayed with the lawyer; there is no movement towards anyone. The location ending begins with t after the noun’s final t, producing double tt.

  4. Complete with “to our lawyers”: We sent the message to our lawyers.

    Show answer or example answer

    avukatlarımıza

avukatlarımıza: several lawyers belong to the “our” group and receive the message. Build plural -lar, possessive -ımız, then dative -a, in that order.

Use it today

Write a short imaginary exchange about sending a message to a lawyer. Use one case form and one possessive form, then explain who each ending refers to.
