A shop can be a destination, a workplace or a business belonging to someone. With mağaza, you will name all three and recognise the same ending in giyim mağazası, a clothing shop.

The idea

Keep the stem mağaza intact, including ğ and the final a: mağazayı marks a specific object, mağazaya a destination, and mağazada a location. Compare mağazam (my shop), mağazamız (our shop) and mağazası (his/her shop). In giyim mağazası, the ending -sı links the two nouns: it identifies a kind of shop without naming an owner. Both this compound and the possessive form take n before a following case ending: giyim mağazasına, onun mağazasında. The table gives this noun’s forms; the related suffix lessons explain the wider patterns.

Watch out

Do not replace mağazayı with mağazası when you mean “the shop” as an object. And do not drop the compound ending when adding direction: “to a clothing shop” is bir giyim mağazasına, not bir giyim mağazaya. These are different jobs for the endings, even though both follow the same stem.

Try it yourself

  1. Write the complete form of mağaza: We saw this shop yesterday.

    Show answer or example answer

    mağazayı

mağazayı: bu picks out a particular shop that we saw, so it is a specific direct object. The linking y comes between the final a and the accusative ı.

  2. Write the plural of mağaza: shops, with no number before the noun.

    Show answer or example answer

    mağazalar

mağazalar: the last vowel of mağaza is a, so the plural is built with -lar. No number stands before the noun here; after üç, you would use mağaza.

  3. Write the complete form of mağaza: Our shop is upstairs.

    Show answer or example answer

    mağazamız

mağazamız: bizim identifies us as the owners. The noun ends in a vowel, so -mız attaches directly; there is no extra vowel between the stem and m.

  4. Complete with a form of mağaza: We are going to a clothing shop.

    Show answer or example answer

    mağazasına

mağazasına: giyim mağazası already names a clothing shop. Keep -sı, then add linking n and the directional -a, because we are going to that type of shop.
