Use açıklamak when you make something understandable or make information known. The object and the situation show whether you are explaining a point or announcing news.

The idea

The pattern is bir şeyi birine açıklamak: explain something to someone. A specific object takes the accusative; the recipient takes the dative, as in bu ayrıntıyı sana. The content can also be a clause: neden beklediğini tells what is explained, and ücretsiz olacağını tells what is announced. The present form is açıklıyorum, the past açıkladım, and the future açıklayacağım. In the future, y links the vowels and the suffix’s k becomes ğ before the first-person ending.

Watch out

Do not use beni for the person receiving the explanation: bana açıkla means “explain to me”; beni açıkla makes “me” the subject matter. Nor does açıkladı alone tell you that reasons were given: with results or a programme it can simply mean “announced”.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete Şu anda yöntemi ___. Use açıklamak: I am explaining the method now.

    Show answer or example answer

    açıklıyorum

açıklıyorum: şu anda places the action in progress now. The final a of açıkla- narrows to dotless ı before -yor; -um identifies the speaker.

  2. Complete Yarın ayrıntıları ___. Use açıklamak: I will explain the details tomorrow.

    Show answer or example answer

    açıklayacağım

açıklayacağım: yarın and the requested future form place the explanation tomorrow. Keep açıkla-, insert y, and use -acağım for the speaker’s future action.

  3. Complete Bu kuralı ___ açıklar mısın? Put ben in the form meaning “to me”.

    Show answer or example answer

    bana

bana: the rule is what needs explaining; the speaker is the listener. The dative of ben is bana, not bene or the accusative beni.

  4. Complete Neden ___ açıkladı. Use beklemek for “why he/she waited”, with -dik and third-person singular reference.

    Show answer or example answer

    beklediğini

beklediğini: the whole “why” clause is the object of açıkladı. Here bekle-diğ-i-n-i contains the third-person possessive marker and the accusative; k softens to ğ. The same written form can refer to “you” in another context.

Use it today

Write one explanation of a decision and one announcement about a workshop. Name the recipient in one sentence, then turn the announcement into a passive sentence without naming the speaker.
