Use belirtmek to make a detail or position explicit in speech or writing. It is common in reports and correspondence; it does not by itself promise a detailed explanation.

The idea

The information stated is the object: gerekçeyi belirtmek means to state the reason. A whole proposition can fill that role: hazır olmadığını belirtti reports that it was not ready; katılacağını belirtti reports future participation. Keep the stem-final t: belirtiyorum, belirtirim. The past is belirttim, the future belirteceğim, and the negative present belirtmiyorum. The table uses plural endings with onlar; singular verb forms can also occur with this subject.

Watch out

Dropping the t changes the verb: beliriyor means “is appearing”, whereas belirtiyor means “is stating or indicating”. Nor does belirtti mean that the speaker explained all the reasons or proved the claim: choose açıklamak or kanıtlamak when that is the action you mean.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete: Yesterday I clearly stated my reason. Use the first-person singular past of belirtmek.

    Show answer or example answer

    belirttim

belirttim: dün places the statement in the past. The stem belirt- takes -ti after its voiceless final consonant, then -m for the speaker; both adjacent t letters remain.

  2. Complete: Tomorrow we will specify the total cost. Use the first-person plural future.

    Show answer or example answer

    belirteceğiz

belirteceğiz: yarın and the requested future form call for -ecek. Its final k becomes ğ before -iz, which identifies the speakers as “we”; the stem’s t stays unchanged.

  3. Complete with one word: The editor stated that the text was not ready. Turn olmamak into the negative clause form required here.

    olmadığını

olmadığını: the negative content concerns the text, not the act of stating. The sequence is ol-ma-dık-ı-n-ı: negation, nominalizing suffix, third-person possessive, linking consonant and accusative. The k softens to ğ before the vowel.

  4. Complete the polite request: Please specify the time you prefer. Use the siz imperative of belirtmek.

    Show answer or example answer

    belirtin / belirtiniz

belirtin / belirtiniz: the request addresses siz, so the bare singular command belirt does not fit. Both endings work here; belirtiniz is the more formal option.

Use it today

Write a short meeting summary: state one reservation, report that something is not ready, and say which detail you will specify tomorrow. Then add a polite request for a preferred time.
