Read a payslip and locate key information in a contract using a small set of words. The examples describe fictional documents and teach language, without setting out legal requirements.

The idea

Read the whole label: maaş means regular salary, while ücret is the broader word for pay. Brüt maaş is before deductions; net maaş is after them. Document labels often form noun compounds: maaş bordrosu and iş sözleşmesi keep an ending on the second noun. When the contract is the specific object of reading, iş sözleşmesi becomes iş sözleşmesini; the compound stays together.

Watch out

A number labelled brüt is not the amount after deductions. Look for net and kesinti before interpreting the figure. Also retain the ending in iş sözleşmesi: simply placing two bare nouns together loses the compound form.

Try it yourself

  1. Choose the amount before deductions: ___ maaş. (brüt / net)

    Show answer or example answer

    brüt

brüt: the clue says “before deductions”, so this describes the starting amount. Net would label what remains after deductions.

  2. Choose the document showing salary and deductions: maaş ___. (bordrosu / sözleşmesi)

    Show answer or example answer

    bordrosu

bordrosu: the clue asks for a breakdown of salary and deductions, which identifies the document as a maaş bordrosu. A sözleşme is a contract.

  3. Complete “Let’s read the employment contract together”: İş ___ birlikte okuyalım. Use the definite-object form of sözleşmesi.

    Show answer or example answer

    sözleşmesini

sözleşmesini: the sentence refers to a particular employment contract as the object of okuyalım. The compound ending in sözleşmesi remains, followed by n and the accusative i.

  4. Which heading gives the day work begins? (başlangıç tarihi / ödeme tarihi)

    Show answer or example answer

    başlangıç tarihi

başlangıç tarihi: the question asks when the work begins. Ödeme tarihi instead identifies when a payment is made.

Use it today

Invent two document headings, one for a payslip and one for a contract. Add a start date and a payment date, then write a polite question asking someone to explain a clause.
