You will conjugate durmak (to stop, to stand still) in the present continuous, past, future and negative past, and tell stopping apart from stopping something.

The idea

The stem dur- has the back rounded vowel u: -uyor and -du give duruyorum and durdum, but the future uses -acak: duracağım. Because the stem ends in r, the present continuous is the full -uyor, not -yor. The verb means both to stop (saat durdu) and to stand still in a place (kapıda duruyorum).

Watch out

Durmak never takes a direct object: arabayı durdum is wrong. To stop something, use the causative durdurmak: arabayı durdurdum. When the thing stops by itself, it is araba durdu.

Try it yourself

  1. Present continuous: I am standing at the door now.

    Show answer or example answer

    duruyorum

duruyorum = dur + uyor + um. After consonant-final dur-, the present suffix starts with the harmonizing vowel u before yor.

  2. Future: Tomorrow we will stop here.

    Show answer or example answer

    duracağız

duracağız: the stem vowel u is a back vowel, so the future is -acak, and its k turns into ğ before the vowel of -ız.

  3. Negative past: The taxi did not stop at all on the way.

    Show answer or example answer

    durmadı

durmadı: the negative -ma- sits between the stem and the past -dı, and the third person adds no person ending; for a single taxi only durmadı fits.

  4. Past tense: The driver stopped the car.

    Show answer or example answer

    durdurdu

durdurdu: the car is the object, so the causative -dur- is added to the stem (dur-dur-), and the past takes -du after the vowel u.

Use it today

Write three sentences with durmak: something that stopped (the rain, a watch, a bus), where you are standing now, and a vehicle that did not stop. Then write one with durdurmak and an object.
