You will conjugate içmek in four forms and learn which things Turkish "drinks" that other languages eat or smoke.

The idea

The stem iç- ends in the voiceless ç and has the front vowel i, and the endings follow from that: -ti in the past (içtim, not içdim), -iyor in the present (içiyorum), -er in the aorist (içerim) and -ecek in the future (içeceğiz). In the future the k of -ecek turns into ğ before an ending that starts with a vowel: içecek, but içeceğim. The verb also covers soup and tobacco: çorba içmek, sigara içmek.

Examples

Read-aloud uses a synthetic Turkish voice available on your device. Voice quality and availability vary; it does not assess your pronunciation.

Watch out

Do not carry "eat soup" or "smoke" over from your own language: Turkish drinks both, çorba içmek and sigara içmek, and keeps yemek for solid food.

Try it yourself

  1. Write içmek in the present continuous: I am drinking water.

    Show answer or example answer

    içiyorum

içiyorum: the stem ends in a consonant, so -iyor attaches directly, and the o of -iyor calls for the person ending -um.

  2. Write içmek in the past for ben: I drank tea yesterday.

    Show answer or example answer

    içtim

içtim: ç is voiceless, so the past ending starts with t and not d; the front vowel i gives -ti, and -m marks ben.

  3. Write içmek in the future for biz: Tomorrow we will drink milk.

    Show answer or example answer

    içeceğiz

içeceğiz: the front vowel i gives -ecek, and its k softens to ğ because the ending -iz starts with a vowel.

  4. Write içmek in the negative present continuous: My father does not smoke.

    Show answer or example answer

    içmiyor

içmiyor: the negative -mi- sits between the stem and -yor, and the third person has no person ending. The verb is the same one used for smoking.

Use it today

Write four sentences about what you drink at which time of day, one in each form of the table, and check that every past form has a t.
