You will conjugate buluşmak in the present, past, future and negative, and add the right form of -le to the person you meet.

The idea

Buluşmak means to arrange to meet someone and get together. It is a reciprocal verb (bul-uş-mak), so the person is marked with ile or -le/-la and never with the accusative: Ayşe'yle buluşuyorum, seninle buluşacağım. The place takes the locative: kafede buluşuyoruz. The stem ends in the voiceless ş, so the past ending starts with t: buluştum, buluştuk. In the future the k of -acak becomes ğ before a vowel: buluşacağım. The negative is buluşmuyorum.

Examples

  • Ayşe'yle sinemada buluşuyoruz. We are meeting Ayşe at the cinema. The person takes -le, not the accusative. After the vowel e a buffer y comes in (Ayşe'yle), and the apostrophe separates the name. The pronoun biz may be dropped.
  • Seninle yarın buluşacağım.I will meet you tomorrow. With you is seninle, an irregular form: sen becomes senin before -le. Never seni buluşacağım. The k of -acak turns into ğ before the vowel of -ım.
  • Dün akşam arkadaşlarımızla kafede buluştuk. We met our friends at a café yesterday evening. The stem ends in the voiceless ş, so the past ending starts with t: buluştuk, not buluşduk. The possessive -ımız comes before -la.
  • Saat kaçta buluşuyoruz? What time are we meeting?Kaç ends in the voiceless ç, so the locative is -ta: kaçta. The present continuous often speaks about an arrangement.
  • Ali ile Deniz parkta buluştu.Ali and Deniz met in the park.Buluşmak is reciprocal, so it has no object: two people meet each other. After a pair joined by ile the verb is usually singular (buluştu); buluştular is also possible.
  • Bugün kimseyle buluşmuyorum.I am not meeting anyone today. After the vowel e, kimse takes a buffer y: kimseyle. The negative suffix comes before -yor: buluşmuyorum, with u like the vowel of the stem.
  • buluşmakto meet upbuluşReciprocal verb suffixmak-mek / -mak: the infinitive
  • buluşacağızwe will meetbuluşReciprocal verb suffixacağ-ecek / -acak: will, going toız-im / -sin / -iz / -siniz: I am, you are, we are

Watch out

Do not make the person an object: seni buluşuyorum and Ayşe'yi buluşuyorum are wrong. Say seninle buluşuyorum; the pronouns are irregular: benimle, seninle, onunla, bizimle, sizinle, onlarla. To get to know someone new, the verb is tanışmak.

Try it yourself

  1. Add “with” to sen (you): with you.

    Show answer or example answer

    seninle

seninle: the pronoun takes -in before the ending (as in benimle, onunla), and the front vowel i gives -le.

  2. Put buluş- into the past for ben: I met up.

    Show answer or example answer

    buluştum

buluştum: the stem ends in the voiceless ş, so the ending starts with t, and the vowel u gives -tu; -m marks ben.

  3. Put buluş- into the future for biz: we will meet.

    Show answer or example answer

    buluşacağız

buluşacağız: after a consonant -acak attaches directly, its k becomes ğ before the vowel of -ız, and the back vowel u gives -acak.

  4. Add “with” to arkadaşlarım (my friends): with my friends.

    Show answer or example answer

    arkadaşlarımla

arkadaşlarımla: the word ends in m, so no buffer is needed, and the back vowel ı gives -la; the possessive stays before the case suffix.
