Hata means a mistake or error. You can make one, notice it, correct it and learn from it. This lesson follows the noun from an unspecified mistake to a particular mistake and then to someone’s own mistake.
The idea
The stem keeps its final a: hatalar, hatayı, hataya, hatam, hatası. No consonant softens. Compare hata yapmak (make a mistake) with bu hatayı düzeltmek (correct this mistake). When the mistake belongs to someone, onun hatası becomes onun hatasını as a direct object. In hatalarımızdan, the plural comes before possession and the ending meaning “from”.

Watch out
Do not treat hatayı and hatası as interchangeable: the first marks a specific object, while the second says whose mistake it is. “I corrected his/her mistake” is Onun hatasını düzelttim: keep possession and add the object ending with n. After üç or birkaç, use hata, without the plural ending.

hatayı
hatayı: bu points to the particular mistake we want to correct. Add the object ending to the vowel-final noun with y; this sentence does not name an owner.
Kardeşim kendi ___ düzeltti. (hata) — Complete: My sibling corrected their own mistake. Use the singular.
Show answer or example answer
hatasını
hatasını: the mistake belongs to the sibling and is what they corrected. Start with hatası, then add n and the object ending -ı; hatayı would lose the ownership.
Biz kendi ___ ders çıkarıyoruz. (hata; çoğul) — Complete: We learn lessons from our own mistakes.

hatalarımızdan
hatalarımızdan: several mistakes belong to us, and they are the source of the lesson. Build hata + lar + ımız + dan; hatalarımız alone would leave out “from”.
Metinde üç ___ var. (hata) — Complete: There are three mistakes in the text.

hata
hata: üç already gives the number. The English translation has “mistakes”, but the Turkish noun stays singular in üç hata.
